Improved Mobility and Connectivity

In 2050, Central Massachusetts’ 40 communities will be well-connected, livable, and will benefit from reduced congestion, enhanced multimodal mobility, and improved air quality. Innovative transportation methods integrate active travel modes and technology, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people between homes, jobs, and services, as well as the transportation of goods between manufacturing and retail distribution centers. Drawing on LRTP, this section seeks to identify the region’s multimodal and intermodal transportation needs, and to outline the necessary projects and initiatives to meet those needs.

The region is taking critical steps to create a comprehensive and holistic approach to a transportation system that integrates biking, walking, and various modes as key components of the region’s multi-modal network transportation system. The goal is to connect people to employment opportunities, friends and family, and goods and services such health care and education. However, central to this plan’s agenda is addressing local needs and connectivity gaps. In a diverse region that includes urban, suburban, rural areas, each community experiences different levels of connectivity and modal options that are rooted in divergent land use patterns and population densities. In alignment with the LRTP, this plan outlines major projects and initiatives that seek to address local disparities and improve mobility for all.
