Central Massachusetts Public Health Training Hub

Overview

The Central Massachusetts Public Health (CMPH) Training Hub is one of ten statewide training hubs funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). We cover 48 municipalities within 6 Shared Services Arrangements, and other non-shared services communities in Central Mass. We aim to provide uniform and standardized training of regional/municipal staff members and board of health members in local public health topics such as food, housing, recreational camps, pools, septic, etc. Our overarching objective is to fortify the competencies and capacities of the local public health workforce, enabling them to meet the Workforce Standards aligned in the Blueprint for Public Health Excellence. The Workforce Standards were recommended by the Special Commission in their final report (Blueprint) and they are part of the Local Public Health Performance Standards codified in the SAPHE legislation.

The following trainings are currently offered to Local Public Health through the MA Local Public Health Training Collaborative (MA-LPHTC) to support meeting the Workforce Standards:
Foundations of Local Public Health Practice

  • No matter where people are in Massachusetts (at home, work, school, or play) local boards of health (LBOH) are responsible for ensuring their safety and well-being. With a LBOH for each of its 351 cities and towns, taking a collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to local public health practice is a key to success. Using the frameworks of the ten essential public health services and the foundational public health services, this course prepares local public health practitioners to: promote the physical, behavioral, environmental, social, and economic conditions that improve health and well-being; prevent illness, disease, injury, and premature death; and eliminate health disparities. Upon completion of these courses, learners will receive a certificate of completion.
  • This course is required for all Management, Management/Agent, Inspector/Sanitarian, Public Health Nurse and Board of Health positions.
    • Please note: If BOH Members conduct inspections, they must meet the requirements listed under Inspector/Environmental Health Specialist in the Workforce Standards.

Modified Foundations Course for Administrative Staff

  • Administrative staff play a vital role in protecting and promoting the health of their communities. This course is a self-paced online program providing new and experienced local Board of Health administrative staff with core knowledge and skills necessary to increase the impact and efficiency of their work. There are six courses that provide a broad understanding of the fundamentals of public health. Upon completion of this course, learners will receive a certificate of completion.
  • This course is required for all Clerical Staff positions.
